The Ełk Cultural Centre invites you to 17 June (Monday) for the film "The Third Part of the Night" as part of the Short History of Polish Cinema

The Third Part of the Night, dir. Andrzej Żuławski, 1971

Michał (L. Teleszyński), a young man, having lost his wife and son, killed in front of his eyes, decides to join the conspiracy in occupied Lviv. While escaping from the Germans, he accidentally ends up in apartment of a woman confusingly resembling his wife (...)

A daring debut of Andrzej Żuławski, under the supervision of Andrzej Wajda, referred to the issues and style of the Polish School, and at the same time violently transgressed it, escalating cruelty, moral chaos, naturalistic paintings.

Żuławski developed a distinct, convulsive language stories about the moral madness of war, as if it were not only a time of struggle survival, but also faith in the sense of existence, in the possibility of understanding with God. These doubts are expressed in the film by Marian (M. Grudziński), Michał's friend.

The apocalyptic atmosphere of the film is supported by numerous quotes from the Apocalypse of St. John, but also from Polish Romantics ("Father plague victims" by Juliusz Słowacki). The plot refers to autobiographical experiences from the occupation period of Mirosław Żuławski, the director's father, co-screenwriter of the film.

In 1973, the film won the "Jantar" award at the Koszalin Festival of Film Debuts "The Young and Film" and the Im. Andrzej Munk at the Film School.

The review is co-financed by the Polish Armed Forces Film Institute.
