Risk of exceeding the level of particulate matter PM10 in the air

28 February 2025, Author: Mateusz Gałęski

The Provincial Crisis Management Centre, based on the analysis of the measurement results, informs about the risk of exceeding the level of PM10 in the air in the Ełk district.

Date of occurrence

28.02.2025 at 9.00 a.m.

Expected duration of risk

From 9:00 a.m. on 28.02.2025 to 24.00 on 28.02.2025

Causes

Meteorological conditions hindering the spread of pollutants in the situation of increased emissions from the household and municipal sector.

Vulnerable population groups:
  • people suffering from chronic cardiovascular diseases (especially heart failure, coronary artery disease),
  • people suffering from chronic respiratory diseases (e.g. asthma, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease),
  • the elderly, pregnant women and children,
  • people diagnosed with cancer and convalescents
Possible adverse health effects:

  • People suffering from heart disease may experience a deterioration in well-being, e.g. a feeling of chest pain, shortness of breath, fatigue.
  • People suffering from chronic respiratory diseases may experience a temporary exacerbation of symptoms, including coughing, chest discomfort, and worsening of asthma attack symptoms.
  • Similar symptoms can also occur in healthy people. During periods of high concentrations of particulate matter in the air, the risk of respiratory tract infections increases.

Recommended precautions:

General population:
  • consider limiting intense physical exercise outdoors if you feel a burning sensation in your eyes, cough or sore throat,
  • limit the ventilation of rooms,
  • Avoid activities that increase air pollution, e.g. burning in a fireplace.

Vulnerable population groups:
  • limit intense physical exercise outdoors,
  • don't forget about your normal medications,
  • People with asthma may experience symptoms more often (shortness of breath, coughing, wheezing) and need their medication more often than normal.
  • limit the ventilation of rooms,
  • Avoid activities that increase air pollution, e.g. burning in a fireplace. If the symptoms of the disease worsen, it is recommended to consult a doctor.

It is also recommended to:
  • increasing supervision of chronically ill people, including the disabled,
  • conducting extensive education addressed primarily to primary and secondary school students and their legal guardians, on the problem of polluted air and possible behaviors and activities reducing the risk of exposure to high concentrations of pollutants, including particulate matter,
  • Keeping track of air pollution information (http://powietrze.gios.gov.pl/pjp/current).
