The City of Ełk is launching an ecological project "Water is Wealth: Improving the condition of water bodies", which will be implemented jointly with Lithuanian Druskininkai under the Interreg programme Lithuania–Poland 2021–2027. It will improve the quality of water in the our city, which will translate into better living conditions for residents and the protection of Environment.

As part of the project, specific activities will be carried out that will improve the the condition of Lake Ełk:

• new water purification installations – special separators and wells will be installed at Wyszyńskiego Street sedimentary water, which will help filter rainwater before it flows into the lake,
• cleaning of the North II Pond – bioremediation will be used, i.e. natural methods of improving the quality of water
• research on water purity – research scientific research on the tributaries of the catchment and Lake Ełk (water quality, analysis of hydromorphological analysis of the lake),
• New ecological classes – at the Center for Environmental Education, a Volunteer Water Monitoring Centre, where school groups will be able to teach about environmental protection,
• development of the "Museum of Lakes" at CEE – New exhibitions and equipment of educational rooms will make residents and tourists They will get to know the nature of Ełk even better. Equipping educational rooms with stereoscopes and analytical kits for conducting educational activities on the subject of purity of the waters of Lake Ełk as part of extracurricular activities for children and school youth,
• workshops and exchange of experiences with Lithuanians – both in Ełk and in Druskininkai, meetings (workshops) will be held, which will help us take better care of the water treasures of the region.

The project will be implemented for two years – from June 2025 to May 2027. The total budget for Ełk is over 393 thousand 80% of which comes from EU funding.

Clean water means health, better conditions for recreation and greater tourist attractiveness of the city. Thanks to this project, our lake will be better protected and new education opportunities will be available to residents Organic.
