The

Mayor of the City of Ełk, Tomasz Andrukiewicz, and the Director of the Historical Museum in Ełk, Dr. Rafał Żytyniec, invite you to the city celebrations.

On September

17, 1939, at dawn, about 50 divisions of the Red Army invaded the territory of Polish, which was struggling with German aggression. The Soviet invasion, which in England was called a "stab in the back", resulted from the desire to occupy the eastern territories of the Second Republic of Poland, in accordance with the division of spheres of influence contained in the secret protocol to the Molotov-Ribbentrop Pact. The Soviet aggression was a violation of the Treaty of Riga of 1921, the Polish-Soviet Non-Aggression Treaty of 1934, as well as international agreements signed by Poland and the USSR. The entry of Soviet troops finally paralyzed the resistance of the Polish army and caused the Polish authorities to leave for Romania.
